'Breath Taking'

Sarah Ann Jump/The Herald
To help students understand and appreciate the efforts of firefighters entering the World Trade Center during the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001, Southridge physical education teacher Scott Buening asked his students to climb the stairs while carrying 50 pounds, similar to the weight of a firefighter’s gear. Southridge Middle School seventh-grader Daniel Uhrick carries two dumbbells up and down the stairs at the school in Huntingburg on Tuesday morning. “It was definitely breath taking,” Daniel said. “I can’t even think about how hard it must have been for the firefighters, especially since they had to carry people down, too.”
