BIRDSEYE — A Birdseye woman was injured in a near head-on crash Wednesday afternoon on a county road west of Birdseye.

Dakota Madden, 23, Birdseye, was eastbound on Schnellville Road in a 1999 Chevrolet pickup truck when the 4:40 p.m. crash occurred north of State Road 64, according to the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department.

Madden told a deputy he dozed off, causing his truck to cross the centerline and strike an oncoming 1998 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck driven by Margie Cooper, 57, of Birdseye.

The impact sent Cooper’s truck back off the road into a ditch where it stopped facing west. Madden’s truck continued east a short distance before running off the roadway, crossing a ditch and stopping in a yard.

Cooper was trapped in her vehicle and had to be extricated by the Birdseye Volunteer Fire Department. A deputy said she was taken from the scene by ambulance with a leg injury.

Madden was treated at the scene and declined transport to a hospital, according to the sheriff’s department.

Both vehicles were totaled.

A deputy cited Madden for driving while suspended.

A Berg’s Garage wrecker, a Department of Natural Resources conservation officer and Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services assisted.
