Birding experience designed for families

The Friends of the Patoka River Refuge will offer a unique birding experience for the whole family, “Peent! An Evening With the Woodcocks,” at 6 p.m. CT Saturdays, March 2 and 9. The public is invited; parents are asked to stay with their children.

“Peent?” is the sound made by male woodcocks while performing their courtship ritual flights.

Participants are to meet at Boyd’s Trail parking lot at for a brief presentation on the woodcock, and then they will walk over to Maxey Marsh Trail and hope the woodcocks are in the mood to put on a show.

From State Road 357 (Main Street) in Oakland City, go east on State Road 64 for 1 mile to county road 1275E and look for the Refuge sign, turn left and follow the signs to Snakey Point Marsh and continue on to the parking lot on the left at Boyd’s Trail.
