MITCHELL — Indiana conservation officers investigating multiple thefts that occurred since Tuesday from vehicles and campers at Spring Mill State Park in Mitchell made an arrest Wednesday.
Authorities said the men they were looking for also allegedly stole a Dodge dually truck early Wednesday. Working off information gathered in part from other local enforcement, conservation officers went to a residence south of Mitchell whereupon two men fled on foot into a cornfield.
One of them, 40-year-old Mark Hackney of Mitchell, was immediately apprehended and booked into the Orange County Jail on outstanding felony warrants for burglary and receiving stolen property. The second man is still at large.
Conservation officers said they recovered numerous items related to the Spring Mill thefts, including the Dodge truck, tools, personal items and jewelry. Also as part of the investigation, authorities recovered a second stolen vehicle early Wednesday in Lawrence County near the state park. It had been stolen Monday evening.
Indiana State Police, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and Emergency Medical Services and the Orleans Police Department assisted.
