The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana has honored Next Act Inc. with its Performing Arts Award.
The award was presented at the council’s Annual Arts Awards Celebration Thursday evening at the DoubleTree by Hilton in downtown Evansville.
Next Act is the nonprofit that purchased and refurbished the Astra Theatre in downtown Jasper.
The Astra first opened in 1937 and then closed in 2002. Reopening the theater was part of Jasper’s 2010 master plan and Next Ac purchased the theater in 2015.
The group hosted several events there during their efforts to raise funds to fully renovate the theater.
Three years later, the theater officially opened to the public in April.
