Arrests made in vehicle-purchase fraudsMay 2, 2013

JASPER — Officers with the Jasper Police Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the United State Marshals Services arrested to Jasper men today on Class C felony counts of check fraud and fraud on a financial institution and a Class D felony count of check deception.
Taken into custody at the Le Merigot hotel in Evansville were 22-year-old Shawen W. Smith, also known as Shawen Kinningham, and 20-year-old David G. Slaton, both of 806 Jackson St.
The charges stem from an investigation into Smith and Slaton allegedly using fraudulent checks and checking accounts to purchase vehicles at Uebelhor & Sons in Jasper and attempts to gain cash at various banks in Huntingburg and Jasper.
In all, Jasper police said, the pair attempted to defraud merchants and financial institutions out of almost $75,000.
Police said more charges are expected as the investigation widens to surrounding communities and states.
