Area athletes galore on academic All-State teams

From Herald Staff Reports

On Tuesday afternoon, the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association announced their first-team and honorable mention Academic All-State Selections.

A total of 382 student athletes, 203 boys and 179 girls, were selected with several local basketball players receiving honors.

Southridge’s Jaden Hayes was the only local athlete to be named to the first team Academic All-State but plenty of local basketball players were honorable mention selections.

Local representatives on the boys side were Dylan Begle (Heritage Hills), Logan Dodd (Northeast Dubois), Jared Englert (Jasper), Kyle Hedinger (Jasper), Cade Jones (Heritage Hills), Joe LaGrange (Southridge), Reece Milligan (Jasper), Phillip Noblitt (Jasper), Reid Steffe (Forest Park), Dillon Sternberg (Jasper), Grahm Turner (Heritage Hills) and Josh Weidenbenner (Jasper). Local girls honored were Heritage Hills’ Claire Heckel and Morgan Vaal.

The IBCA Academic All-State team is a program where academic ability and athletic ability are both considered in the selections. Items such as grade-point average, college board scores and academic class rank are considered along with athletic performance in areas such as points per game, rebounds per game and assists per game.

IBCA-member head coaches from schools across the state may nominate their seniors who meet criteria that include a 3.5 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale, a class rank in the upper 25 percent of one’s class, an SAT score of 1,100 (on the reading and math sections) or an ACT score of 24.
