JASPER — Nationally renowned singer, guitarist, pianist and songwriter Iris DeMent will perform at the Astra Theatre on Friday, March 22.

DeMent defies easy categorization, writing and performing music associated with divergent genres such as country-folk, Americana, gospel, folk and alternative country.
The Los Angeles native writes and performs songs about a wide array of themes and problems, including small-town life, skepticism, human frailty, death, sexual abuse, religion, governments, foreign wars and personal suffering.
DeMent released her first album, Infamous Angel,” in 1992 and her most recent solo album, “The Trackless Woods,” was released in 2015. In 2016 she reunited with John Prine for a second album of duets, “For Better or Worse.” She has also appeared on albums with Jools, Steve Earler, and Emmylou Harris.
Her music and performance has been used by the Coen brothers for their 2012 film “Ture Grit.”
In 2017, DeMent received the “American Trailblazer Award” at the annual Americana Music Honor & Awards.
Tickets for DeMent’s concert sponsored by Next Act are available at nextact.org.
