HUNTINGBURG — The Huntingburg Airport’s newly extended runway opened Friday afternoon, with visitors being allowed to drive down the now 5,501-foot-long, 100-foot-wide runway.

Dubois County Airport Authority officials have been planning for more than 10 years to make the airport’s runway longer and wider, which will allow planes to carry more weight. The $13.1 million project included lowering County Road 200 West, constructing a 180-foot tunnel over the road near the end of the new runway, moving about 270,000 cubic yards of dirt to the end of runway to fill in where the extension is now be located, reconstructing 700 feet of existing runway, and taking care of utility work.
