Accused shoplifter caught fleeing on bicycle

JASPER — A man accused Thursday afternoon of shoplifting at the Walmart Supercenter was arrested a short time later while allegedly fleeing on a bicycle.

The Jasper Police Department was advised at 2 p.m. by Walmart asset protection staff that a male shoplifter was being detained. The suspect, Andrew W. Lyon, 38, 257 Brucke Strasse, Jasper, had allegedly been observed putting on a belt, then pulling the tags off the item and placing them on a shelf.

Lyon fled the scene on a bicycle, but was taken into custody by police in the vicinity of Leslie Drive and Reyling Drive south of Walmart.

He was then accused of taking the belt and shoes valued at $44.75 from Walmart.

Authorities booked Lyon into the Dubois County Security Center at 4:30 p.m. on a preliminary misdemeanor count of theft.
