Cats secure split with Tigers

From Herald Staff Reports

Two dual meets down, two wins for the Jasper girls swim team.

Both Wildcat swim squads hosted Evansville Memorial on Monday night at the Jasper High School Natatorium as the Jasper girls surged past the Tigers, taking first in 11 of the 12 events on their way to a 114-72 win. The Wildcat boys fell 119-67 to an Evansville Memorial squad that finished 18th at last year’s state finals.

Emma Hopf continued her early-season dominance in the sprint races, especially in the 100-yard freestyle where she finished almost a full four seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Hopf won that event in 55.92 and also took first in the 50 freestyle (25.51). Jasper’s other multiple first-place individual finishers were Cady Mehringer in the 200 medley (2:26.30) and 100 butterfly (1:04.28), Payton Painter in the 500 free (5:54.53) and 100 breaststroke (1:16.30) and Addison Nolan in the 200 freestyle (2:10.67) and 100 backstroke (1:05.85).

On the boys side, Cole Erny finished with a season-best 5:07.61 in the 500 freestyle on his way to a first-place finish. Wildcat divers Austin Young and Luke Hoffman notched the top two finishes in that event, while Wildcat coach Jenae Gill lauded Ben Nolan for his two season-best times in the 200 free and 100 butterfly plus a season-best split in the 400 free relay.
