JASPER — “The Gruffalo,” a Family Fun Series program, will be performed at the Jasper Arts Center at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

“The Gruffalo” is the tale of a little mouse who encounters all kinds of dangers on his walk through the big woods. He uses his cunning to scare away a fox, an owl and a snake, each of whom wants to make a meal of him. He cleverly convinces them not to eat him by telling them about his friend, a Gruffalo, whose favorite food happens to be … a fox, an owl or a snake. This works very well until he actually meets the Gruffalo. A hybrid of a grizzly bear and a buffalo, the Gruffalo spouts horns, a tail and shaggy fur. When The Gruffalo threatens to eat the mouse, the mouse cleverly tells him that he is the scariest creature in the forest. And so the story continues.

Based on the popular children’s story by Julia Donaldson, this performance is played by the English company Tall Stories. It has played in London’s West End as well as on Broadway and has been made into a short movie. More recently, Donaldson published “The Gruffalo’s Child,” which has also been made into a short feature film.

The play is suitable for all ages. Tickets, priced at $15 for adults and senior citizens and $8 for students and children, are available by calling the arts center at 482-3070.
