OTWELL — Otwell Elementary School teacher Marilyn Brandsasse received the Peabody Energy Leaders in Education award at a surprise convocation Monday.

Brandsasse has taught art and music at the school for 14 years. She composed the words and lyrics for National Blue Ribbon and Four Star School songs the students performed at community celebrations.

The award, presented by Peabody Energy in St. Louis, honors education professionals in the central and southwestern Indiana communities where they live and work. Award winners must have at least three years of education experience.

Brandsasse received a $1,000 check as well as a basketful of goodies. She is invited to attend the annual recognition dinner this summer and is eligible for the regional Peabody Energy Educator of the Year award for 2012-13 that comes with a $5,000 prize.
