Man allegedly filmed porn images of children

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man allegedly filmed pornographic images of children he was supposed to be babysitting and distributed the images to others, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.

David Simpkins, 25, was charged Wednesday with producing child pornography for allegedly filming two children under the age of 3 at their Indianapolis home while their guardians were away. Prosecutors said Simpkins, who was supposed to be babysitting the children, was arrested Saturday in Muncie. It’s not clear if he has an attorney.

Authorities said they began investigating Simpkins after Homeland Security agents in Boston discovered images depicting child pornography and traced them to Indianapolis.

“What began as a tip to law enforcement in Boston ended over the weekend with the arrest of this defendant, and the end of his alleged abusive acts against these young victims,” said U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett.

Court documents allege that at some point Simpkins distributed the pornographic images to be viewed by others.

The case was part of the Justice Department’s Project Safe Childhood launched in 2006 to target the growing nationwide epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Senior Litigation Counsel Steven D. DeBrota, who’s prosecuting the case for the government, said that Simpkins could face decades in prison if he’s convicted on the charge. He said Simpkins could also face years of supervised release at the end of his prison term, as well as lifetime registration as a sexual offender.
