JHS wrestlers receive awards

JASPER — Several athletes collected awards at Jasper High School’s wrestling team banquet Sunday.

Ruger Kerstiens was named MVP and also picked up the Iron Man Award and coaches award as well as earning the most team points with 96 and setting the school record with 17 consecutive pins. Brandon Hernandez and Trent Smith shared the most improved award, while other honors went to Tommy Brock (Team Motivator), Dillon Hurst (Eli Green Award), Geordon Terwiske (freshman award), Ian Songer (Bobby Schitter Takedown Award with 52), Grant Brescher (Kelli Eckert Spirit Award), Moises Valenciano (John McComish Wrestling and Football Scholarship) and Scott Varner (most valuable JV wrestler). Kerstiens and Hernandez both earned the fastest pin award (17 seconds), while Eric Gehlhausen and Nathan Schitter shared the Rick Stenftenagel Sportsmanship Award. Jackson Ball and Adam Schwartz shared the 15th Man Award.

Also, Kerstiens, Hurst and Songer were recognized for being named academic all-state, while Schitter, Smith and Noah Collon earned honorable mention. Additionally, Schitter, Terwiske, Kerstiens, Cole Kreilein, Carson Popp and Valenciano were named to the All-Big Eight Conference team. Picking up senior awards were Schwartz, Jackson Ball, Kerstiens, Schitter, Valenciano, Gehlhausen, Brescher, Hernandez and student managers Lydia Fleck, Elizabeth Scheeter and Karlie Eckert.
