Former Jasper hoops coach Scott dies at 85

Lloyd E. “Barney” Scott, an Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame coach who spent three seasons leading Jasper’s program, died Wednesday at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour. He was 85.

Scott, a graduate of Jeffersonville High School and Hanover College, racked up 334 victories in a 20-year coaching career. That included a brief but successful stint at Jasper, where he led the Wildcats to a sectional title in 1960 and a regional crown in 1961. He was 55-20 overall in his three seasons with the Wildcats.

In total, Scott coached 11 sectional champion teams and six regional champion squads as he also coached at Seymour and Hagerstown. The 8,810-seat gymnasium at Seymour High School is named for Scott, who was inducted into the state’s hoops hall of fame in 1981 and had just one losing season in his coaching career.
