WINSLOW — A former boyfriend is in custody and charged with the overnight murder of a 24-year-old Winslow woman.
Pike County’s 911 dispatch center received a call at about 11 p.m. Tuesday regarding a domestic disturbance in which shots had been fired at 104 S. Bluff St. in Winslow. Within minutes, Indiana State Police, Pike County Sheriff’s Department deputies and officers with the Winslow and Petersburg police departments converged on the residence.
Upon entering the home, police found 32-year-old resident Christopher Morton in the kitchen holding a handgun in one hand and a beer can in the other. A trooper subdued Morton with the aid of a Taser stun gun after Morton refused to drop his weapon, state police said.
Officers then searched and found 24-year-old Kelsie McDonald in the living room. She had been shot and was unconscious, according to state police.
Police officers initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation and notified emergency medical personnel.
McDonald was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Jasper where she was pronounced dead, according to state police.
Authorities said the 3-year-old daughter of McDonald and Morton was also in the residence but she was unharmed. The girl is now with family.
Morton was arrested and booked into the Pike County Jail on a Class A felony count of murder. He is being held without bond.
Pike County Emergency Medical Services also assisted.
