Swimmers from Jasper and Southridge closed down their seasons on the state’s biggest stage Friday, as the Wildcats and Raiders both found the competition rapid in the state finals at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis.

To simplify, the story goes like this: Heritage Hills’ girls divers are having the greatest season in team history. Yet that hardly scratch the story’s surface.

Jenae Gill just wanted things to go according to plan. So naturally, Mother Nature threw Jasper’s first-year swimming coach a curveball. And down came the snow.

Heather Deel had it down to a science. When her alarm clock howled at 5:15 a.m., she knew there was no time to waste. After rushing to grab a granola bar, she zipped off in her car, consuming the oats en route to her 5:45 a.m. practice. She arrived at the Southridge High School pool with five minutes to spare.

Oh, the holidays. A swimmer’s paradise. The most grueling training period on the season’s calendar coupled with a two-week stretch in which meals are bountiful and kids have nowhere to be during the frigid winter days.

You don’t automatically want to become friends with someone who yells at you at 5:30 in the morning while you’re running flights of stairs, lifting weights and doing plyometric exercises. But Jenae Gill has a funny way of endearing herself.
